An engineering manager fired by Google said the tech giant views staff as “100% disposable”.
Justin Moore said on LinkedIn that he was fired following an automatic deactivation of his account.
Moore was one of 12,000 people affected by the company’s mass layoff last week.
A Google engineer fired after more than 16½ years with the company said the tech giant views staff as “100% disposable”, in a post on LinkedIn.
Justin Moore, director of engineering at Google, was one of 12,000 people affected by Google’s layoffs last week. Moore wrote that he found out he was fired via an automatic account deactivation at 3:00 a.m.
He said he had received no further “information” or “communication” regarding his release. Even though he received a communication, he cannot access it due to deactivation.
“It also drives home the idea that work is not your life, and employers — especially big, faceless ones like Google — view you as 100% disposable,” Moore wrote in the post.
“Live the life, not the job.”
Moore said his experience at Google has been “(largely) wonderful” and that he’s proud of the work he’s done around the world.
Moore started as a senior software engineer with the company in 2006 and progressed to software engineering manager in 2019, according to his LinkedIn profile.
On Friday, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google’s parent company Alphabet, sent an email to staff saying it was laying off about 12,000 employees, or about 6% of its global workforce. Pichai said he took “full responsibility for the decisions that got us here.”
He added that those being terminated “cross Alphabet, product areas, functions, tiers and regions.”
The layoffs have impacted workers across the company, including some with seven-figure salaries, those with high performance appraisals and some in management positions, The Information reported.
Google officials told the outlet that some of those who lost their jobs were earning between $500,000 and $1 million a year.
